Relay and Controls
Building off of the DNA that formed the company many years ago, Watana provides highly specialized Relay/Control technical services to utilities. These services include relay field commissioning, standard, relay setting/design releases, and relay SME's that also serve on our Scoping Team. Along with these capabilities we also offer construction specialists to serve as job oversight, planning, and testing consultants.
SPCC for Transmission & Distribution
Safety and compliance are first and foremost in substation design. Our team of engineers specialize in analyzing substations and their surrounding areas for the environment hazards of oil filled equipment and determining substation specific prevention and mitigation plans. Their experience includes designing oil flow prevention barriers, updating plan drawings, geographical surveying to predict areas of hazard, and producing proper documentation to ensure compliance with state and federal standards.
Substation Construction Oversight
We comprise several decades worth of experience in utility construction, safety & health knowledge. They are responsible for daily oversight of contract companies that work in energy transmission constructing substations and transmission lines. Activities include monitoring all safety, environmental, & quality (conformance to utility specifications and standards) aspects. Employees are considered Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the field of substation & transmission line construction and are available to assist with engineering/design challenges that may arise during all phases of project execution.
Substation & Transmission Project Scoping
Working closely with project management development teams with utilities, the Watana scoping team prioritizes, plans, scopes, and estimate projects designated for engineering and design. Examples of project bundles include, but are not limited to transmission class stations, distribution class stations, transmission line projects, customer/wholesale stations, etc. Our scoping team consists of experienced, proven SMEs that can mobilize quickly and deliver the highest quality statement of work reports, equipment estimates, conceptual drawings/exhibits and constructible scopes consistent with utility standards. The team maintains two-way communication throughout each project with respect to sponsors, construction & maintenance, operations, engineering and asset management stakeholders with a range of disciplines, including substation physical, relay & control, civil, & T-line engineering & design.
This group’s extensive time in Line and Substation maintenance and construction is second to none. With a combined 290+ years of practice, we’re positive there is not a challenge beyond our team's experience that we can efficiently and effectively determine a solution. Everything from improving work plans to addressing clearance and outage issues - our team will have your answer before the project is finalized.
Substation Physical Engineering & Design
Building off the Scoping Team, these employees execute all physical tasks required to engineer & design station upgrades including, but not limited to, major equipment replacement, bay and/or bank additions, and rebuilding aging substations. Duties include site visits, client coordination, design reviews, constructability reviews along with development of bills of material and release letters within the utility system. Emphasis is on safety & reliability along with ensuring designs are the most economical, long-term solution. All employees have extensive design experience & are backed by team members considered Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the field of substation physical having worked for various utility clients.
Transmission Relay/NERC Compliance
Our NERC (North American Reliability Council) Compliance team works closely with Utility Enterprise management ensuring Utility Energy complies with all current NERC standards. Our NERC compliance team consists of employees that have a vast knowledge of Relay Protection schemes and how critical these are to protecting Utility Energy's assets. This team also includes employees who prepare technical IT requirements for these standards & provide field visits to critical sites to ensure compliance. They also understand that compliance monitoring is essential to assess, investigate, evaluate & audit to measure conformity with NERC Reliability Standards. This team is instrumental in keeping utilities in compliance and prepared for audits from NERC.
